Usually the amount of water added exceeds the amount of water lost by evaporation and wind blowing, so some circulating water (called sewage) must be discharged to maintain the balance of water. The determination of the treatment method is often related to the amount of water and water quality of the make-up water, and also to the performance of the production equipment. When multiple agents are used, chemical reactions that may exist between the agents are avoided.

The closed cooling water circulation system uses a closed cooling device, and circulating water flows in the pipe, and the outside of the pipe is usually cooled by the wind. There is no other factor that changes the quality of the circulating water except for material leakage from the heat exchange equipment. In order to prevent salt scale in the heat exchange equipment, sometimes the cooling water needs to be softened. In order to prevent the corrosion of the heat exchange equipment, corrosion inhibitors are often added; when using high concentration and highly toxic corrosion inhibitors, safety should be taken, and the cooling water discharged during maintenance should be properly disposed.
